Instagram API error 2207005: Image format is not supported

Code36001
Subcode2207005
MessageThe image format {current-image-format} is not supported. Supported formats are: {format}.

What it means

Instagram feed, carousel and story images must be JPEG. PNG, WebP, HEIC (iPhone photos), GIF and AVIF are rejected with 2207005, even when the file opens fine everywhere else.

Meta's error table lists a permission-related fix for this code, but the message itself is about the format, and converting to JPEG is what resolves it. Threads and Facebook Pages also accept PNG.

How to fix it yourself

magick input.heic -colorspace sRGB -quality 90 output.jpg

Convert to sRGB at the same time. Instagram converts other color spaces itself, and the colors can shift.

How postcache handles it

postcache detects the real format from the file, not the extension, and reports it. With convert=crop or convert=pad it turns PNG, WebP and GIF into an sRGB JPEG that passes. HEIC isn't accepted yet; convert it to JPEG first.

curl -X PUT "https://postcache.dev/v1/media?convert=pad" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $POSTCACHE_API_KEY" \
  -H "x-target: instagram.feed" \
  --data-binary @photo.png
